World of Other Music
Episodes: 17
This podcast follows steps of my father Z. K. Slabý, who prepared Svět nové hudby (World of the New Music) for the Vltava station in 90’s. In following years I moderated this show by myself until 2020. I want to discover for you the widest possible range of non-conformist music that can’t be heard anywhere else on the radio. Alternative, avant-garde, improvised, oppositional, progressive, experimental, postmodern, current and free music. In this show, we will make a journey through scenes from around the world and discover it's distinctive connection. Inspired by jazz, rock, world music or contemporary classical music? Breaking down the boundaries between the music worlds creates new and unexpected art. Discover the World of New Music too!

Entrance to World of Other Music on Ponava Radio
The world of other music moved from the Vltava to the Ponava. The show, which was prepared for the Vltava station by Zdeněk Slabý in the 1990s, later with his son Petr, is now returning to the air on Radio Ponava. The first part is dedicated to the homage of Zdeněk Slabý, whose work is followed by his son Petr in the same wording of the slogan insights into alternative, avant-garde, improvised, new, opposition, progressive, experimental, postmodern, current, free, klezmer, etc. This time with musicians from France, Switzerland, Japan, Poland, Germany, Norway, Austria, Russia, USA and other countries.

TOC
This episode is dedicated to the band TOC (Jérémie Ternoy - Fender Rhodes, Ivann Cruz - guitar, Peter Orins - drums). Free hypnotic pop punk, post-rock, jazz-core… Disturbing, orgiastic and communicative, Toc is unclassifiable, but shakes the feet and heads.

New era of Satoko Fujii
Satoko Fujii, a pianist who finds music hidden in the details of life. In ensembles big and small, the prolific musician uses sound to make the world’s complexities a little more graspable. She’s "a virtuoso piano improviser, an original composer and a band-leader who gets the best collaborators to deliver," says John Fordham in The Guardian. In concert and on nearly 100 albums as a leader or co-leader, the globe-trotting Japanese native synthesizes jazz, contemporary classical, avant-rock, and Japanese folk music into an innovative music instantly recognizable as hers alone.

John Wolf Brennan in various constellations
John Wolfe Brennan is from Ireland (1954). He grew up in a musical family (his relatives also include the singer Enya). However, he received his music education only in Switzerland, where he graduated from the conservatory in the field of jazz piano; he also studied German and film studies. The almost two-hour portrait of Petr Slabý introduces us to this musician in an exhaustive way: from the beginnings of flirting with world music of various origins to freejaz experiments in various ensembles. However, Brennan also likes to play (and record) on his own: his solo piano compositions might surprise us with his almost new-age approach; at other times, their modal and rhythmic singing recalls Olivier Messiaen's "bird" period. Brennan likes to think conceptually (some recordings create distinctive creative "lines"), he likes to be inspired by philosophy, painting and literature. After more than 40 years of his creative activity, there is definitely something to choose from, and it is by no means boring!

International combo Spinifex and projects of his members John Dikeman and Gonçalo Almeida.
European international modern fusion quintet based in the Netherlands. Non-Western music encounters Western contemporary composed music and anarchic European free improv clashes with tightly structured math metal. Extremely tight irregular structures are contrasted with extensive free improvisations. However, a substantial part of this episode consists of other (side?) projects of the band members - a kind of "Spinifex spin-offs": saxophonist John Dikeman and bassist Gonçalo Almeida. These are based primarily on improvisation, combining free jazz backgrounds with elements of Arabic or Moroccan music. We can also hear long drones here, calling for a ritual dive into the musical purification bath.

Thirty-three stops with UK label Discus Music, part 1.
The new episode of Petr Slabý's "World of Other Music" takes a closer look at the Discus Music label's production - and it's going to be a very close one, as it's the first of three episodes dedicated to this nimble British label. Discus was founded by musician (primarily saxophonist) Martin Archer at the end of eighties - and it still draws on the ethos and energy of that period to this day. Personal and ideological connection to Rock In Opposition scene, free improvisation in the spirit of the best British tradition (Derek Bailey, Evan Parker et al.), but also songs that sound like Cocteau Twins played on acoustic instruments - all this you can hear in this episode. https://discusmusic.bandcamp.com https://discus-music.org

Martin Küchen and Martin Klapper in philosophical and toy-making toils
The eighth episode of World of Other Music offers an introduction to the work of the Swedish saxophonist Martin Küchen and the (originally) Czech experimenter (his specialty is playing with toys) Martin Klapper. These two musicians will play at Radio Ponava's first birthday, so take it as an invitation. We start with the rather traditional jazz sound of the Angles 9 formation, of which Küchen is a member, but then we quickly leave the limited space of twelve notes towards various noises, noises and (pa)sounds, from which Küchen makes his expressive solo tracks. These often have non-musical themes, relating to various - and often tragic - historical events. Martin Klapper's sound world is somewhat similar, perhaps a bit more playful and abstract. Hear!

Signe Emmeluth
The Norwegian free jazz scene has been very agile in recent years, also thanks to generous state support. Saxophonist and composer Signe Emmeluth has been developing her career with several formations, as is customary these days, and already has a number of notable albums to her credit. Her "home" band is called Emmeluth's Amoeba - and it produces really changeable, unpredictable and volatile music, sovereignly floating between composition and improvisation. In addition to the saxophone, Signe Emmeluth also controls various electronic sound sources, which expands her expressive possibilities towards abstraction. All this can be heard in the new episode of World of Other Music with Petr Slabý!

Soft Machine archival recordings from 1968 to 1971
On the photo from 1970, you can see the classic Soft Machine quartet, sitting in front of London's Royal Albert Hall, where they were as the first rock & pop group in history to play a promenade concert. Its recording titled Live at Proms 1970 kicked off their ongoing archive series in 1988, but you won't hear it in this show as it was added as bonus disc to their "Third" double album several years later. And in Wolrd Of Other Music, we are presenting the production of independent labels, which is the case of American Cuneiform Records, who have been releasing archive recordings of Soft Machine for more than 25 years with relevant care. So get ready for a flight through mainly concert recordings of top representatives of the so-called Canterbury scene and one of the most original progressive bands ever. Programme is presented by Miloš Latislav.

First ten by Zehra Records
The fourteenth episode of the World of Other Music on Ponava offers a flight through music that could be characterized by the adjective "oriental". Enjoy the magic of exotic voices and masters of instruments with names like krakeb, gimbri or tar. Don't forget the added tracks from the albums used in the show, which we offer to stream exclusively on our website, of course with a link to Zehra label's Bandcamp.
